Education is a lifelong process. It begins the day we are born and ends the day we die. It is found in every society and comes in many forms, ranging from the "school of hard knocks," or learning by experience, to formal institutional learning - from postindustrial to nonindustrial communities, from rural to urban settings, and from youth to older persons. Sociologists of education look into questions such as what is being done about these issues, how policies regarding these and other questions affect schools, and what seems to be working to educate young people. While sociologists do not try to answer questions of right and wrong, good and bad, they do consider the state of education and the outcomes of certain policies and practices.
